Planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2025? There’s an important new entry requirement you need to know about. Starting April 2, 2025, the United Kingdom is rolling out a new regulation that will affect millions of European travelers heading to the UK by air or sea.

What Is the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorization, commonly known as the UK ETA, is a new electronic visa that all travelers entering the United Kingdom must obtain — unless they hold a passport from the United Kingdom or Ireland. This digital permit is linked directly to the traveler’s passport and grants permission to enter the UK for tourism, business, or short visits.

Failure to present a valid UK ETA at embarkation will result in denial of boarding, so it’s essential to apply well in advance of your trip.

Who Needs the UK ETA?

Beginning April 2, 2025, all travelers of European nationality — except those holding a UK or Irish passport — will be required to obtain the UK ETA before entering the United Kingdom by air or sea. If your country currently requires a traditional visa to enter the UK, that requirement remains unchanged.
